Congestion? no confusion
The problem is that TfL are confused about policy. Is the London congestion charge designed to cut congestion or emissions? When TfL first proposed making driving in the charging zone free for cars that emit less than 120g of CO2 per kilometre, the race was on to dealers, to buy the latest Smart Fortwo (116g/km) or BMW 118d (119g/km) and others. So four years on, whats better? TFL says in 2002 * London suffered the worst traffic congestion in the UK and amongst the worst in Europe * Drivers in central London spent 50% of their time in queues * Every weekday morning, the equivalent of 25 busy motorway lanes of traffic tried to enter central London * It was estimated that London lost between £2-4 million every week in terms of lost time caused by congestion It also says in one of todays papers, that the introduction of the charge hasn’t decreased the traffic at all, and this year is expected to generate another £200 million in revenue. It also states that half the money goes back into administering the scheme. LEZ So, if it hasn’t cut congestion, by TfLs own admission what has it done apart from pour money into Ken Livingstone’s coffers? And then we have the LEZ that has minimal impact of health and will make a loss. When will someone put a stop to this lunacy that is playing havoc with our businesses? Will London really benefit from the changes being made, or is it gold plating on another politicians pension plan? In the meantime according to the Mail drivers are in Chaos:- Cars and motorcycles are not affected but that did not stop confused motorists ringing the AA with queries including: • Is it okay for asthma sufferers to enter? • Do my horses in the horse box count? • Does it affect my 4×4? • Do we have to pay a toll? When will they get it right? or don’t they care? |
