Driving in the Fog
The Highway Code, is an interesting source of information, but how many people look things up in it on a regular basis? For driving when foggy it states that driving when visibility is seriously reduced – when you cannot see for more than 100 metres (or the length of a football pitch) means you must put your lights on. There’s no legal obligation to use fog lights, but they must be switched off when you can see better. However if your car is involved in an accident in reduced visibility and its fog lights weren’t on, then it may be queried by an insurer. Driving in heavy traffic is challenging enough at the best of times, but you should be ultra alertt when driving in fog, as visibility can seriously deteriorate in a matter of seconds. Generally speaking, it’s better to be safe than sorry, so use them when you feel its appropriate. Don’t keep switching them on and off, this can be a distraction so wait for a consistent improvement in visibility before switching them off. Driving tips in seriously reduced visibility conditions: * Use dipped headlights at all times and windscreen wipers and demisters. Be safe rather than sorry. * Familiarise yourself with your front and rear fog lights – know how to switch them on and off – and use them when appropriate. Check you partners know how to as well. * Beware of other motorists / drivers not using headlights. * Only drive as fast as conditions allow and maintain a greater distance between you and the car in front (follow a three-second rule) – tailing brake lights can give a false sense of security and is dangerous. * A good guide as to whether you need fog lights are the street lights - if the road has street lights on, then you probably don’t need fog lights on. * Watch your stopping distances - be able to stop within the distance you can see clearly – this is espicially important on motorways and dual carriageways where vehicles are travelling faster. * Check your mirrors before you slow down. * If a junction has limited visibility, stop, wind down the window, and listen for traffic. When you are sure it is safe to go forward, do so positively and do not hesitate.
