Greener Christmas?
A greener Christmas, The Essex courier way from Arrow Light Haulage The key to a greener Christmas is organisation. Start by making a list of what needs to be done, bought and where from. Then you can eliminate the unnecessary journeys from your list and make it more efficient. 1.The tree dilemma- plastic or real? Plastic trees take longer to bio-degrade, so the benefits of its multiple uses is outweighed by the harm it causes after use. Real trees are almost always thrown in the landfill after use. Contact your local council to get it recycled after Christmas. Buy from a sustainable source, better still buy one with roots and keep it planted in a tub for many Christmases to come. 2.Eliminate waste - Do you really need new decorations for your tree this year? Can you recycle last years? children and grandchildren would love the task of glitzing up your existing decorations! One of the most fun decorations to make is popcorn strung together and covered with glitter then hang on the Christmas tree. For younger Children painting pasta gold and silver then threading is a great afternoon of fun and a focal point hanging on the tree. 3.There are plenty of ideas to be found at www.allfreecrafts.com 4.Revamping and recycling the decorations are a fun and cost effective way of being greener this Christmas. 5.If you really do need new decorations buy Fair trade or from Charity Shops, that way your spend is also doing some good. 6.Wrapping presents. Use the odds and ends of wrapping paper that you have from other special occasions for the adults. Try left over wallpaper, again the kids can colour and draw on this to make it extra special. 7.Recycle the discarded paper, but then you knew that already! 8.What about Christmas lunch? This can be very green indeed! 9.*Buy local, buy local, buy local 10.*Try Goose instead of Turkey, Goose was the traditional Christmas bird up until WWII and then Turkey took over... 11.*Try your local Farmers Market. Lakeside in Essex has one the first Sunday every month. Get there early, its very busy. 12.*Check out the organic ranges in your local Co-OP, they cover things from organic wine to organic sprouts. 13.Food miles are at the top of peoples lists. Avoid food that you know has travelled a long way or is not seasonal at this time of year. Food miles can appear in your festive drink too, try to avoid alcohol that has to be flown in from specific regions and buy local instead. The Nyetimber vineyard produces excellent UK wines and some very good sparkling wines that compare favourably with the top champagnes. 13.Try sending an e card instead of a paper card. If you send paper cards go for ones made from recycled materials, they are no longer vastly more expensive than ordinary cards. 14.Green presents....there are many to choose from at many great prices. For the best value choose something that can benefit your local community and you can see the benefit first hand. 15.Rather than commute hundreds of miles to see a big name panto, contact your local theatre and see what's on. What are your tips for a greener Christmas?
